{"id":219,"date":"2014-09-14T19:04:26","date_gmt":"2014-09-14T19:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/docneuro.jz7sunfr-liquidwebsites.com\/receptive-aphasia\/"},"modified":"2014-09-14T19:04:26","modified_gmt":"2014-09-14T19:04:26","slug":"receptive-aphasia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/docneuro.com\/receptive-aphasia\/","title":{"rendered":"Receptive aphasia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patients with receptive aphasia can speak clearly (fluently) but cannot understand what others say and have difficulty putting together meaningful sentences.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>On exam this manifests as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patients do not follow commands because they cannot understand the command.<\/li>\n<li>Some patients have \u201cword salad,\u201d in which speech is produced clearly but consists of a string of non-sensical words strung together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Receptive aphasia is most commonly caused by lesions of the posterior (inferior) branch of the left MCA. There are specific subtypes of receptive aphasia distinguished by whether or not a patient can repeat a phrase spoken to them.<\/p>\n<p>Lesions of Wernicke\u2019s area (superior temporal gyrus) cause a specific type of receptive aphasia, known as Wernicke&#8217;s aphasi. This is characterized by a lack of comprehension of speech (like other receptive aphasias) plus an inability to repeat a phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Lesions of areas of the sensory cortex around Wernicke&#8217;s area (but sparing it) cause receptive aphasia in which a patient can repeat a phrase spoken to them. This is a transcortical sensory aphasia.<\/p>\n<p>Receptive aphasias are often \u201cfrustrating to the physician\u201d because the patient cannot understand what they are being asked to do.
